Volume 2 Number 2 • Fall - Winter 2010-2011
Millions of stars
Could fit in your hand.
I watched the blinding
Epiphanies that dragged you
From your childhood bed.
A soft hum approached us
And told us to hide;
To mask everything we've seen.
I'm good at pretending.
This smile on my face almost
Feels real.
We were grown to be loved
and fall because we love
Too much.
Hayley Garrigus is a 16 year old aspiring poet from Los Angeles. She took a course on 20th century poetry during the summer of 2009 at Harvard University and was introduced to the brilliance that is Louise Gluck and Franz Wright. She hopes to one day support herself by studying to become a photojournalist/linguist, consequently allowing poetry to remain as a passion rather than a meal ticket. In the meantime, Hayley will continue to tolerate the creativity-less pit of high school by listening to M83 and throwing paint onto her bedroom walls.
